Caroline's call in Acceptable Losses — right decision, or just the one we root for?

Everyone on that bridge accepts the math. Caroline doesn't. I wrote her refusal to feel like the heroic choice — but I tried to make the captain's math genuinely defensible, and I'm curious whether that landed.

Was the captain wrong? Or was he right and Caroline got lucky? Military SF readers, I especially want your read on this one.
